Sound waves enter the outer ear and are transmitted through the auditory canal to the eardrum. To put things in perspective, cilia swaying the width of an atom is equivalent to the tip of the Eiffel Tower swaying half an inch (Corey et al., 2004). The cilia are so sensitive that they can detect a movement that pushes them the width of a single atom. The cochlea contains about 16,000 hair cells, each of which holds a bundle of fibres known as cilia on its tip. The movements of the hair cells trigger nerve impulses in the attached neurons, which are sent to the auditory nerve and then to the auditory cortex in the brain. The movements of the fluid in the cochlea bend the hair cells of the inner ear, in much the same way that a gust of wind bends over wheat stalks in a field. The vibrations cause the oval window, the membrane covering the opening of the cochlea, to vibrate, disturbing the fluid inside the cochlea (Figure 5.19). The resulting vibrations are relayed into the middle ear through three tiny bones, known as the ossicles - the hammer (or malleus), anvil (or incus), and stirrup (or stapes) - to the cochlea, a snail-shaped liquid-filled tube in the inner ear that contains the cilia. At the end of the canal, the sound waves strike the tightly stretched, highly sensitive membrane known as the tympanic membrane (or eardrum), which vibrates with the waves. Īudition begins in the pinna, the external and visible part of the ear, which is shaped like a funnel to draw in sound waves and guide them into the auditory canal. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 80 decibels can cause hearing loss. The human ear can comfortably hear sounds up to 80 decibels. The sound of a typical conversation (about 60 decibels) is 1,000 times louder than the sound of a faint whisper (30 decibels), whereas the sound of a jackhammer (130 decibels) is 10 billion times louder than the whisper. Each increase in 10 decibels represents a tenfold increase in the loudness of the sound (see Figure 5.18, “Sounds in Everyday Life”). Zero decibels represent the absolute threshold for human hearing, below which we cannot hear a sound. Loudness is measured using the unit of relative loudness known as the decibel. The amplitude, or height of the sound wave, determines how much energy it contains and is perceived as loudness ( the degree of sound volume). Longer sound waves have lower frequency and produce a lower pitch, whereas shorter waves have higher frequency and a higher pitch. The wavelength of the sound wave (known as frequency) is measured in terms of the number of waves that arrive per second and determines our perception of pitch, the perceived frequency of a sound. Unlike light waves, which can travel in a vacuum, sound waves are carried within media such as air, water, or metal, and it is the changes in pressure associated with these media that the ear detects.Īs with light waves, we detect both the wavelength and the amplitude of sound waves. Vibrating objects (such as the human vocal cords or guitar strings) cause air molecules to bump into each other and produce sound waves, which travel from their source as peaks and valleys, much like the ripples that expand outward when a stone is tossed into a pond. Just as the eye detects light waves, the ear detects sound waves. In a fraction of a second, our auditory system receives the sound waves, transmits them to the auditory cortex, compares them to stored knowledge of other voices, and identifies the caller. A mother can pick out her child’s voice from a host of others, and when we pick up the phone we quickly recognize a familiar voice. But the ear is particularly sensitive to sounds in the same frequency as the human voice. The human ear is sensitive to a wide range of sounds, from the faint tick of a clock in a nearby room to the roar of a rock band at a nightclub, and we have the ability to detect very small variations in sound. Sound waves that are collected by our ears are converted into neural impulses, which are sent to the brain where they are integrated with past experience and interpreted as the sounds we experience. Like vision and all the other senses, hearing begins with transduction. Describe the process of transduction in hearing.Draw a picture of the ear, label its key structures and functions, and describe the role they play in hearing.

I was disappointed with the Lust fight to some degree because you could basically ignore Usiel, but at least you had the option to kill both if you wanted to.īut here when you've just prepared yourself to have a second phase and think that you'd need to save more heals for it next time - bam! and the fight is over. Basically, the fight ends at half of his HP bar, because Phase 2 is just a bit harder than a QTE sequence would be. Just let him suck in a couple of those.įrankly, I was disappointed with this fight. Stay afloat and use dodge to move around quickly, that way you can easily arm the mines but stay away from their range so they don't explode on you. But even if you miss a few - you can just heal through them, they don't hit that hard unless you catch a full combo. The rest of his attacks are telegraphed and should be dodged. When he starts spitting acid - get close to him and just sprint around, because if you stay at the edges of the room he can keep on doing it for a long time. This ensures two things: he won't be able to chew on you (force hollow prevents being sucked in, but he can still grab you if you're close) and you will have time to back away when you see that he's about to do the tentacle sweep. Probably better tactics out there, but I used this for both Challenging and Apocalyptic. This kept me out of the poison pits I forced him to make in his immediate perimeter, and kept my further away from the vaccum, and gave me enough time to get away from the tentacle sweep. The reason being that you don't want to fill your safe zone, by halfway to the wall to fully to the wall, with health depleting poison pools.Īside from the beginning of the battle, where I fight his exposed body at close range, I am usually fighting him at medium range. The above 2 tactics I used in conjunction with running around in tight as possible circles around him when he spits his acidic poison. I do spam dodge to get away from him and not get sucked in. The vacuum, yeah it was hard to read at first and can be an instakill depending on your health. Then you can hammer his prone tentacle for a couple seconds. Just get back to the wall, he can't reach you there. Okay, for Tentacle sweep I never even bother trying to doge them. It happens when the eyeball grows too long from front to back or when there are problems with the shape of the cornea or the lens. Myopia is impaired vision, also known as nearsightedness that makes far-away objects look blurry. Įye disorders that nurses commonly see in practice include myopia, presbyopia, color blindness, dry eye, conjunctivitis, styes, cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma. See the illustration of the extraocular muscles in Figure 8.2. The extraocular muscles are innervated by the abducens nerve, the trochlear nerve, and the oculomotor nerve (cranial nerves III, IV, and V). Movement of the eye within the orbit occurs by the contraction of six extraocular muscles that originate from the bones of the orbit and insert into the surface of the eyeball. Tears flow through the lacrimal ductto the medial corner of the eye and flow over the conjunctiva to wash away foreign particles. Tears are produced by the lacrimal gland that is located beneath the lateral edges of the nose. These nerve cells of the retina leave the eye and enter the brain via the optic nerve(cranial nerve II). The cones are sensitive to different wavelengths of light and provide color vision. Two types of photoreceptors within the retina are the rods and the cones. The innermost layer of the eye is the retinathat contains the nervous tissue and specialized cells called photoreceptors for the initial processing of visual stimuli. The cornea can be reshaped by surgical procedures such as LASIK. The cornea, with the anterior chamber and lens, refracts light and contributes to vision. The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. The iris constricts the pupil in response to bright light and dilates the pupil in response to dim light. The iris is a smooth muscle that opens and closes the pupil, the hole at the center of the eye that allows light to enter. The conjunctiva extends over the white areas of the eye called the sclera, connecting the eyelids to the eyeball. The inner surface of each lid is a thin membrane known as the conjunctiva. The eyelids, with lashes at their leading edges, help to protect the eye from abrasions by blocking particles that may land on the surface of the eye. See Figure 8.1 for an illustration of the eye. The eyes are located within either orbit in the skull. Our sense of vision occurs due to transduction of light stimuli received through the eyes. Open Resources for Nursing (Open RN) Anatomy of the Eye 'Hello, in there,' he whispered to every house on every side as he moved. He listened to the faint push of his soft shoes through autumn leaves with satis-faction, and whistled a cold quiet whistle between his teeth, occasionally picking up a leaf as he passed, examining its skeletal pattern in the infrequent lamplights as he went on, smelling its rusty smell. There was a good crystal frost in the air it cut the nose and made the lungs blaze like a Christmas tree inside you could feel the cold light going on and off, all the branches filled with invisible snow. On this particular evening he began his journey in a westerly direction, towards the hidden sea. For long ago he had wisely changed to sneakers when strolling at night, because the dogs in intermittent squads would parallel his journey with barkings if he wore hard heels, and lights might click on and faces appear and an entire street be startled by the passing of a lone figure, himself, in the early November evening. Mr Leonard Mead would pause, cock his head, listen, look, and march on, his feet making no noise on the lumpy walk. Sudden grey phantoms seemed to manifest upon inner room walls where a curtain was still undrawn against the night, or there were whisperings and murmurs where a window in a tomb-like building was still open. And on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows. Sometimes he would walk for hours and miles and return only at midnight to his house. He would stand upon the corner of an intersection and peer down long moonlit avenues of pavement in four directions, deciding which way to go, but it really made no difference he was alone in this world of A.D., 2053 or as good as alone, and with a final decision made, a path selected, he would stride off, sending patterns of frosty air before him like the smoke of a cigar. To enter out into that silence that was the city at eight o'clock of a misty evening in November, to put your feet upon that buckling concrete walk, to step over grassy seams and make your way, hands in pockets, through the silences, that was what Mr Leonard Mead most dearly loved to do.
